Abstract:This is a general talk about computational mathematics. We will trace its fascinating history from ancient times to modern day in terms of people, machines and algorithms. We will discuss the goals and practices of computational mathematics, and the challenges and opportunities that it provides.
Speaker details:Susanne C. Brenner is a Boyd Professor at Louisiana State University with joint appointments in Mathematics and the Center for Computation & Technology (CCT), where she has served as Associate Director for Academic Affairs since 2008. A former President of SIAM (2021-2022) and recipient of prestigious honors including the Humboldt Research Award (2005) and AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Prize (2011), she is a Fellow of SIAM, AMS, AAAS, and AWM. With extensive editorial leadership (including Managing Editor of Mathematics of Computation, 2012-2024) and service on key committees (NSF, AAAS, and SIAM), her career spans groundbreaking research, professional society leadership, and academic administration.
